Guideline on short-term volunteering
Short-term volunteer (STV) programmes – participating in a volunteer project ranging from a few hours up to three weeks – has sometimes been frowned upon, despite the intentions of organisations and volunteers wanting to contribute in a positive manner.
These negative perceptions can make people unsure of whether it is ethical or not and sometimes even leads to the point of organisations deciding not to offer these programmes.
This guideline was developed by the Volunteer Working Group as an outcome of a panel discussion on the benefits of short-term volunteering at WYSTC 2014 in Dublin and provides tools for organisations to enable them to run positive, valuable short-term volunteer programmes that are beneficial to the people, communities, wildlife and projects involved and can be a product you can promote.
