WETM-IAC 2015: J-1 Visa Exchange Visitor Programme – Washington update

04 February 2015
4 Feb 2015 -

Michael-McCarryThe special J-1 visa programme session has become a popular fixture for over ten years at WETM-IAC. It is a must for all sending and receiving agents running exchange programmes in the US.

Michael McCarry, from the Alliance for International Educational and Cultural Exchange will provide WETM-IAC delegates with an insight in the the latest J-1 visa programme changes.

Created by the US Department of State to foster international understanding, the J-1 Visa Exchange Visitor Programme provides opportunities for foreign students and other participants to Alliance_logovisit the United States for short-term exchanges designed to provide rich cultural interactions with American people and society while enhancing participants’ English and professional skills. The programme has been a successful component of American public diplomacy for more than 50 years.

As the new Republican-controlled Congress convenes and a Presidential campaign looms on the horizon, exchange programmes face a now-familiar set of challenges:

  • Implementing the requirements of the just-finalized Subpart A
  • A flurry of legislation from anti-trafficking activists
  • A thorough State Department review of high school exchanges
  • And a long-considered Summer Work Travel rule, which could be published at any time.

Join this session to find out more about these challenges, the potential threats that they may cause to exchange programmes and the possible outcomes.

Date: Tuesday, 17 March – 11:20 to 12:30

Venue: New Orleans 1 and 2, Sheraton Lisboa
